Case Studies:

For more than 35 years, Hycomp has been building reliable, worry-free compressors for a variety of customers. Our three main compressor lines provide a wide-range of solutions.

Air Compressors
Hycomp Air Compressor

Model: 2WN35 Duplex
Gas: Air, Ambient
Suction Pressure: 0 psig
Discharge Pressure: 220 psig
Flow: 21 scfm

The base hospital at the United States Air Force base in Lackland, Texas needed a continuous supply of high pressure 220 psig oil- free air to feed their nitrogen generating system. Few compressor manufacturers are able to supply continuous duty oil-free air at this elevated pressure, as the USAF discovered.

Because of our reliable track record, developed through previous compressors supplied for the USAF, Hycomp was asked to solve this high pressure oil-free air application.

Our 2WAN35 oil-free water-cooled duplex compressor system produced the required continuous-duty elevated pressure of 220 psig and flow of 21 scfm. Years of dependable operation have been provided with this system since 2001.

Hycomp Air Compressor

Model: 3AN44V
Gas: Air
Suction Pressure: Ambient
Discharge Pressure: 420 psig
Flow: 19 scfm

A municipal water district required a new water system using hydropnuematic tanks to buffer and absorb water hammer shocks. The tanks needed to be pressurized to 350 psig, and the compressors had to be oil free and rated for continuous duty.

A Hycomp 3-stage oil free air compressor was installed to meet this requirement. Because the unit was located in the mountains, a space heater was installed on the premium efficiency motor. Intercoolers included moisture separators that were also heat taped. A crankcase heater was included on the compressor to overcome cold temperatures. A heavy-duty inlet filter with rain hood was also included.

The city water has been protected due to the shock absorbing capability of the hydropnuematic tanks, and the compressors meet the strict requirements for drinking water. Hycomp oil free compressors are often used successfully in this type of application.

Model: 3AN44V
Gas: Air
Suction Pressure: Ambient
Discharge Pressure: 250 psig
Flow: 34 scfm

The City of North Las Vegas required a new culinary drinking water system. Hydropnuematic tanks were recommended to buffer and absorb water hammer shocks. The compressors needed to be oil free, air cooled, and rated for continuous duty at 250 psig.

Because of the high discharge pressures and requirement for continuous duty, two Hycomp 3-stage oil-free air compressors were specified and installed to meet this requirement. An air cooled after cooler and separator were also installed to ensure cool air temperatures to the hydropneumatic surge tanks.

After installation the customer said the compressors were running smoothly, and were both quiet and cool. Continuous operation at 250 psig was no problem for these three stage air cooled units, and the compressors meet the strict regulations for drinking water.

Air & Gas Boosters
Hycomp Air Booster

Model: WN28F-B
Gas: Air, -40F pdp
Suction Pressure: 135 psig
Discharge Pressure: 600 psig
Flow: 440 scfm total

A purified water bottling company needed continuous duty high-pressure oil-free air to blow mold their PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottles. A quick delivery was required on a duplex system, as the need for high pressure oil free air had been overlooked until the bottling machines were ready to be delivered.

With 135-psig clean plant air available, Hycomp recommended a duplex oil-free BoostAirTM air booster package. The duplex system was approved, produced and shipped within the short six week time frame needed to start production. By compressing the existing plant air to 600 psig these Hycomp boosters provided the necessary flow.

Not only were energy costs reduced by using the existing plant air, but capital investment was lower because the customer was able to adapt to their existing compressor system. The customer is now able to provide their advertised water in its pristine natural state using the oil-free high-pressure Hycomp air boosters.

Hycomp Nitrogen Gas Booster

Model: AN6A-B
Gas: Nitrogen
Suction Pressure: 35 psig
Discharge Pressure: 125 psig
Flow: 10 scfm

To prevent moisture pickup and reduce ignition potential during installation of an explosive media, an automotive airbag manufacturer required high purity, dry nitrogen. The customer had already installed a local nitrogen generation system to provide the gas but required a compressor to boost the pressure from 35 psig to a storage pressure of 125 psig. The compressor had to maintain the 99.99% nitrogen purity without risk of introducing oil or oxygen into the process.

Hycomp provided a turnkey nitrogen booster system including the gas compressor, control panel, motor, belt guard, after-cooler and receiver. The small AN6A-B nitrogen booster was mounted onto an 80 gallon receiver to save space. Because nitrogen supply was critical to ensure uninterrupted production, the booster was made capable of continuous duty operation.

Since 2000 the Hycomp nitrogen booster has provided trouble free service requiring only standard preventative maintenance. The nitrogen gas supply has remained successfully dry and pure keeping the production of airbags within industry quality standards.

Hycomp Nitrogen Gas Booster

Model: WN4A-B System
Gas: Nitrogen, 99.9% Purity
Suction Pressure: 85 psig
Discharge Pressure: 300 psig
Flow: 18 scfm each

A prominent manufacturer of aircraft engines needed a replacement nitrogen booster system to supply critical high-pressure nitrogen to their laser cutting machines. These machines cut nickel based alloys and high purity was an absolute necessity. They had previously experienced difficulties obtaining replacement parts for their current booster system, and as the plant had received a critical contract, full production was needed with guaranteed uptime.

Hycomp was contacted through their local compressor dealer. With the dealer, Hycomp addressed the customer’s technical concerns, including the desire for a PLC to control the boosters. Positive references from a sister plant, who were also using Hycomp gas boosters and compressors, confirmed their decision to go with Hycomp.

The manufacturer purchased two duplex nitrogen booster systems to support their laser cutters, totaling four separate compressors. Hycomp’s delivery was short and allowed plenty of time to be ready for full production. A PLC was incorporated to control and monitor an array of critical conditions and provided simple set point operation.

Hycomp Nitrogen Gas Booster

Model: AN4A-B
Gas: Nitrogen, 99.9% Purity
Suction Pressure: 300 psig
Discharge Pressure: 450 psig
Flow: 71 scfm each

One of the largest family owned laser-cutting facilities in the United States runs 29 lasers. Part of their current nitrogen supply was at 300 psig coming off a cryogenic bulk nitrogen tank. To increase their cutting capabilities for the machines fed by the cryogenic system they needed to increase the pressure to 450 psig. As they already had a Hycomp nitrogen compressor installed with their on-site nitrogen generation system, it was a natural fit to install two additional high pressure boosters to assist the cryogenic system.

A Hycomp high suction pressure oil-free nitrogen booster was installed. Standard Hycomp packings were arranged in a way to accept and contain the 300-psig suction pressure. Hycomp gas compressors are oil-free and designed to prevent the introduction of oil into the gas stream, enabling the customer to maintain the nitrogen at high purity.

With this increased pressure, the customer can cut up to one inch carbon steel, 5/8 inch stainless steel and 1⁄2 inch aluminum on each machine. The plant is now able to run all 29 lasers concurrently at the high-pressure nitrogen demand.

Hycomp Nitrogen Gas Booster

Model: AN4A-B301
Gas: Nitrogen
Suction Pressure: 150 psig
Discharge Pressure: 350 psig
Flow: 18 scfm

A manufacturer of carbon fiber structures needed high purity nitrogen to charge their autoclaves. Because the autoclaves needed to be filled in a short period of time, a 350 psig receiver was installed to store enough gas to fill them in just a few minutes. The customer needed a gas booster to increase the nitrogen pressure from 150 psig leaving a locally installed nitrogen generator, to the storage pressure of 350 psig. The nitrogen had to maintain its high purity without risk of introducing oil into the gas.

A Hycomp high-pressure oil-free continuous duty nitrogen booster was installed between the nitrogen generator and storage tank. The booster runs an average of six hours each day.

The Hycomp oil-free nitrogen booster has performed to the customer’s expectations since its installation in 2001, introducing no oil into the gas stream. The booster provides 350- psig pressure at continuous duty. Using this Hycomp booster the customer has been able to produce carbon fiber structures for the aerospace industry, linear accelerator components for research, and high performance Cannondale bike components.

Gas Compressors
Hycomp Gas Compressor

Model: AN4A-B
Gas: .65 SG Natural Gas
Suction Pressure: 0 psig
Discharge Pressure: 40 psig
Flow: 12-20 mcfd

A customer in the oil and gas industry wanted to recover gas vapor exiting their low displacement storage tanks. Normally, the tanks hold from 4-8 ounces of pressure before releasing gas into the atmosphere. Their objectives were to meet environmental government requirements and increase profit by capturing the escaping gas and returning it back into the system.

Hycomp was contracted to provide a gas compressor to meet these objectives. By recovering the gas and sending it back through the system, the customer is able to use this gas instead of wasting it through flaring while meeting Environmental regulations.

An independent dealer who works closely with oil well producers in eastern Wyoming packaged the system. A variable frequency drive is used to adjust speed, usually starting the compressor at minimum speed and increasing rpm as amounts of gas allow. The gas is safely compressed without any contamination entering the crankcase.

The tanks normally will hold from four to eight ounces of pressure before releasing into the atmosphere. Their objectives were to meet EPA government requirements while making a profit by capturing the escaping gas and returning it back into the system.

Seven AN12B-G compressors were provided by Hycomp and installed on separate tanks. By recovering the gas and sending it back through the system, the customer is now able to use this gas instead of wasting it through flaring while meeting environmental regulations.

A steel mill in China required a nitrogen booster to optimize plant uptime. Complete turnkey installation was desired in order to minimize the technical requirements of local installation and start-up.

Because nitrogen is used in multiple areas during the manufacturing of steel, and many times the nitrogen is required at an elevated pressure, Hycomp oil free nitrogen gas boosters were a great choice for this application.

Through Eumex Enterprises we supplied this water-cooled, two stage nitrogen booster compressor. Two redundant 30 horsepower systems were installed and the units were each packaged with an 80-gallon low- pressure suction receiver, a 240 gallon 500 psig discharge receiver, aftercooler, gas filter, control valves and a control panel. The receivers were both Chinese Safety Quality License (SQL) certified.

Since the initial installation, three additional sets of nitrogen compressors have been installed in the same facility.

Hycomp Gas Compressor

Model: 2WN150F-G321
Gas: Wet Carbon Dioxide Mix
Suction Pressure: 1.5 psig
Discharge Pressure: 110 psig
Flow: 141 scfm

An aluminum mill in Hong Kong uses carbon dioxide produced in an exothermic gas generator to provide surface protection in their annealing process. They needed to compress this gas to provide a reservoir of gas, enabling rapid purge of their large annealing furnace, reducing heating cycle time. A compressor was needed to be able to withstand the corrosive characteristics of wet carbon dioxide gas and still be oil free.

Hycomp engineers designed this two-stage water-cooled 60-horsepower compressor package. Stainless steel coolers, safety valves, traps and piping were used to guard against the corrosive nature of the wet C02/N2 mixture.

Hycomp has produced many similarly successful C02 compressors in tough, corrosive applications.

Discharge Pressure: 145 psig
Flow: 63 scfm

The topside process and facilities modules for the Vincent FPSO (Floating Processing, Shipping, Offloading) require a large high pressure gas compressor that boosts the gas from the oil wells. This compressor requires nitrogen to purge and pressurize the seals/gaskets during cold start and startup procedures. The nitrogen compressor system was required to be ATEX certified for explosive atmospheres, and resistant to the corrosive offshore marine environment. Compounding the difficulty, lead time was limited to five weeks.

Hycomp provided a solution that met ATEX requirements and featured a marine offshore coating system on the entire package. Each major casting of the compressor and component of the skid assembly was white sandblasted and painted with inorganic zinc primer before assembly. The entire package was also painted with a temperature resistant silicone acrylic paint.

By air freighting in an ATEX compliant motor from Europe and obtaining the controls from reliable sources in the United States, the five week delivery period was met.

…All four Hycomp compressors have operated reliably for their entire lifetime. The maintenance is straightforward and inexpensive. The factory support is outstanding.
